A Good Quote

Another great quote from Bobbitt: EU leaders “cling to the decaying corpse of a European super nation-state with no clue as to what alternative other than breakup and secession there might be.”

  1. I haven’t been entirely following the conversation, but I can’t quite agree with this American cynicism. Many Europeans still remember what kept happening here when Europe wasn’t a single entity. Over hundreds of years numerous European countries were at war with each other, culminating in two devastating wars in the C20, in which millions of people were slaughtered. Whatever faults the EU may have, it has helped to contain the urges of countries to go to war with each other. That’s what many people fear will start to happen again if the EU fractures.

I know there have been, and still are terrible wars elsewhere, including the Balkan states – most off which have subsequently joined the EU. Is this a reason for Europeans to not try to cling to an organisation which is perceived to have brought us a degree of peace after a terrible period which we have not yet forgotten?
