Two of my international colleagues shared that they’ve been unable to convince our administration to refer to the Muslim ban as Muslim ban. Because “there’s no proof it’s a Muslim ban.”

My university put out an official statement condemning the EO. But we had over 100 students and faculty who were stranded because of it, so for us it’s personal.

We’ve had trouble attracting international students as it is. Now it will be downright impossible. The International Affairs Office is in a state of panic.

It’s not really a Muslim ban (except for Syrians), but the goal is to keep votes from islamophic bigots, so it has the same political purpose.

Oh, I know many universites rely on the cash provided by international students. (Those students aren’t eligible for most grants, scholarships and pay higher tuitions.) GSLIC & Co hates educational institutions, so this a feature, not a bug.

It’s not just the money. International students and scholars are priceless because they provide a variety of different perspectives, educational styles, learning opportunities, etc. I can go on and on for weeks about the Dirty War in Argentina and then a student whose parents suffered persecution under the dictatorship shares his story with the class, and it does more good than 10 lectures I can give.
Or take the math department. They say they simply don’t exist without students and graduate students from India and China. It’s not the same standard of teaching when you don’t have these students as models and tutors.

And who’s going to teach our Yoruba and Arabic classes without our Fulbrighters from Nigeria and Morocco? We’d have to close the whole program.

The rush to have everyone major in STEM for the last 15 years hasn’t produced loads of American grad students?
