Phoneless

The fellow at the AT&T store was very flippant about the whole thing.

“What am I supposed to do until the new phone arrives?” I asked.

“Well, you just do without,” he said casually, as if he wouldn’t be howling at the moon within the first half hour if somebody told him he’s got to do without his phone.

“Oh, sure,” I said conversationally, trying to look like a person who can easily do without her phone for hours.

It’s all funny, of course, until I remember that I’ve got 5 meetings tomorrow. What am I supposed to do during those? Listen to what people say and gradually lose all faith in humanity?

Observe the grain of the table, the light sources, the fashion foibles of the people there, imagine cut scenes for your revenge exercise fantasies, use a paper to doodle nonsense, ask questions to amuse yourself, admire your nails…really, what did you do during boring classes, meetings, etc as a kid?

    • At the first meeting today, it was horrible. I checked out and didn’t even hear the answers to my own questions. If I can’t split my attention in two, I literally black out.

      • Get a book. Make it some detective novel if need be, make it something on your e-reader if you can’t afford to have the Shakespeare omnibus unstealthily cracked open on your knee, but make sure you have something to read with you at all times. It’s necessary for survival.

It takes a WEEK to get a phone replaced out there in the Illinois frontier??

    I’m glad I live in a modern, 21st-century state like Arizona! 🙂

She may have an older model phone (read: not currently on the floor). I don’t know how long they keep models on display since I only replace my phone under duress and definitely outside of the warranty/contract period.
      :/

      • They say they don’t keep the kind of inventory at the store that would allow them to do replacements right there. Because apparently these problems happen a lot and there is literally no space in the store. I Googled it and it’s true, Samsung screens do tend to go crazy with ink blots. It’s a weird company: if their phone doesn’t explode, it gets messed up another way.

Samsung devoted an entire commercial during the Oscars to shots of its quality control process. “Please believe us that our new phone isn’t going to explode.”

  3. Out of topic – but this is a bit chilling – (crude machine translation)
“Bard Good to Trump won – the US is moving towards civil war
The philosopher and the future of the Scout Alexander Bard predicts that the United States is a bloody future.
The philosopher Alexander Bard has once again put on their reconnaissance spectacles and looked ahead. This time, the Trump and the United States is in focus.

“In a way it was good that he won now. Otherwise had a worse won in four years, I’m convinced, “said Bard Filip and Fredrik in the TV show Breaking News, writes Aftonbladet.

Alexander Bard believes that the US can now be heading for a new civil war.

“The US is a totally divided country, there are no forces that unite these two camps. They stand in the way different directions, and social media is driving. ”

” Then it becomes damn bloody obvious. Trump says that the enemy is outside, it is an Arab or a Mexican immigrant. There he completely ignores is that the enemy can be in the United States. ”

Alexander Bard puts his finger on the right-wing populist wave that during the subsequent summer and autumn of last year resulted in both Brexit and President Trump.

“Historically, we have people been ingenious in creating new things, but it will not be in the form of jobs. The solid job we have already tossed, gold watch is no longer available, we are now taking the next step and smashes the idea that the main a time longer have a job. You have to stop thinking about jobs, “he said in an earlier interview with Business Week.

But is this development that has resulted in the Trump as president of the United States – a backlash from those who can not keep up, according to Bard.

“This trend favors course those smart networkers and who likes to move. But of course there are also lots of people who think that this development is very difficult and hate, which is why Sweden Democrats is growing and growing, it is why Donald Trump in the US is so successful. ”

And you can also see the Swedish backwash from the right-wing populist wave rampage across the Atlantic, says Bard.

“The society is there to emerge a ‘nätokrati’ and a ‘konsumtariat’ and we wrote about already sixteen years ago. Konsumtariatet are men who are kind twenty-nine years old, lives in Filipstad, where neither military service or factory longer left and the girls have drawn and goes to college in Karlstad. But this tjugonioåringen living at home, he’s tired, fat and listless and online consume his porn, gambling casino and hatred. and then we wonder why Sweden Democrats are growing!”

      • Absolutely. That’s what I’ve been saying for years now.

“But this tjugonioåringen living at home, he’s tired, fat and listless and online consume his porn, gambling casino and hatred. and then we wonder why Sweden Democrats are growing!””

      • And this is precisely why the first part of the quote is untrue. Tired, fat and listless will not go out to fight.
