I have to sign up for faculty development workshops at least once a year. So I signed up for a workshop on how to deal with microaggressions because at least I can get some fun out of it. It’s on Wednesday, and it’s a pity I still won’t have my phone because I would have blogged the hell out of it. People will give examples of microaggressions experienced by our students and stuff. Hilarious!
P.S. WordPress doesn’t like the word microaggressions. This must mean that not enough academics are blogging.
Haha! Can’t wait! Also, my husband checked out your blog and stumbled over your PS in one of the posts from Saturday. He loves you.

Also, I am quite sure this is not of interest to the workshop organizers, but maybe to you: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1745691616659391

Microaggressions are the papercuts of isms if you kept getting them, they never healed and they were infected with poison ivy. – every one of those seminars.
They are popular seminars to offer because they don’t demand or compel systemic change and focus on the individual and not the institution.

Please, please share as many examples as you can remember from the workshop! 🙂
Oh, and by the way, if you decide to share at the workshop Shakti’s excellent insight about microaggressions and systemic change, you might get accused of committing a microaggression yourself!

In practice, straight up aggressions often gets coded as “micro-aggressions”, which is great for people who want to claim they are not “aggressive” for whatever reason, and great for minimizing.
I suspect Clarissa’s foreign born & non-white colleagues will not be eager to use this language of “micro-aggressions”simply because everyone else in that group will use those experiences to wank over their guilt/get defensive/cry/congratulate themselves on being great/whatever. It would also be interesting to note who attends this seminar.

Can you write down what will be going on on paper, or would that be impolite?

Oh, don’t worry, I’ll still blog about it but it would have been more fun to do liveblogging.
