Fucking Over the Dreamers

I’m rushed so I’m not sure I’m reading this right. Are the Democrats refusing to make a deal on the Dreamers? They want to keep them hanging because making a deal with Trump would [attempt very unsuccessfully to] prevent more of these sad situations from happening? 

This is one issue where the rank hypocrisy of the Democrats makes me want to not vote for them ever. These are 800,000 people whose tragic situation could be resolved already. And this opportunity is going to be squandered for what crucial gain, exactly? What’s the enormous upside that will make this sacrifice worth it?

Let’s hope I misunderstood and the Democrats make the deal already.

    This is a congenital liar, and trusting him to hold his end of the so-called deal is naive. As the author of the article you linked to wrote, he’d find some other way to screw them over.

      So what? Let’s not even try because it might not work out? That’s an impotent position if there ever was one. And why offer a deal to begin with? To torture these kids with false hope?

        What Trump wants is to tie the Dreamer deal to tighter border security (build the wall, increase the number of border agents, etc.) and to enact more stringent immigration regulations in general. The Democrats say they want to protect the Dreamers, but they won’t agree to the increased security measures.

            • I’m getting the feeling that everybody lurves the status quo.

            I personally would absolutely support a deal where these kids get their green cards today and then future cases face much tighter regulations since there is clearly an enormous demand for that among the electorate. If there’s got to be a useless wall or 15 useless walls, that’s not a price that’s too high to pay to give these kids relief now.

          • It was beyond clear he was going to do this. This was the basis of his whole election campaign. The chances that he wouldn’t push for this were nil. So why offer him the deal only to step back from it? I just talked to a student who is on DACA. She is crying because she’s had hope for the past few weeks that is now dashed. What kind of a fucking cruel game is this? Why are these people being jerked around? To demonstrate that Trump is evil?

          These are real people, real lives. The fuck is going on?

    The article you link to doesn’t say what concessions they’re asking for.

    As best as I can tell from this Fox article, there is nothing about granting DACA recipients permanent residency in this deal. You’ve railed against this program which is essentially reapplying for a work permit every 2 years in perpetuity. You don’t actually like DACA. I understand any deal to be concessions in exchange for DACA, “as is” at best.

    The White House on Sunday night also asked to limit family-based green cards to spouses and the minor children of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, in addition to creating a point-based system.

      Green cards have always been for spouses and minor children. Who else can it be? Third cousins twice removed?

      When my friends back in Ukraine won the green card lottery, the 19-year-old daughter had to stay behind because she was of age. That was in 1996. I also emigrated to Canada on a separate program than my parents because I was 20 at the time of application and an adult. My mother, a Canadian citizen, could never bring her sisters to Canada because they are not immediate family. The point being that it’s a very established and regular limitation for both US and Canada.

    All of Trump’s (and the Democrats’) “demands/concessions” on this complex issue are up for negotiation over the next 6 months, until the Dreamers’ time runs out if nothing is passed. So I don’t understand why the Dems are screaming that the wall is a deal-breaker at this point.

    Yes, the wall will be a waste of money, but it will be mainly a symbolic victory for Trump and won’t have much effect on illegal immigration, anyway — it’s all the other up-for-negotiation regulations that will make a real difference.

      I don’t understand either. People have started running away whenever they see me because they know I’ll keep asking why they are opposed to the wall. But nobody has any answers.

    There are other categories of green card eligibilitybut as you know, those other categories are limited and the line is long. AFAIK, spouses and minor children are the only green card category that does not have a quota.

    Didn’t you have an employment category eligibility when you got your green card? I was speaking with one guy whose employer is sponsoring his green card but has been in the line for 10 years.

    Here is the latest visa bulletin that’s available for September (they haven’t issued the October one yet), and check the dates listed for any green card category that isn’t immediate family (IR) –aka spouses and minor children.

    So do think you people who already green cards or citizenship should not be able to bring their spouses and minor children over or they should have a nice line stretching for decades? What is the nuclear family anyways? Does it help people integrate successfully into their chosen country or not?

      The issue with the Dreamers is that under Trump’s plan they won’t be able to legalize their parents. The same parents who organized this sorry lifestyle for them. I’m not seeing a problem with that aside from all the money the Dreamers end up making leaving the country to feed all the relatives in Guatemala. But at least it will be after taxes.
