What People Care About

I am trying to work it out in my head exactly what Trump has done in the last month or so that could have improved his image even by four points.

People have seen their paychecks and have noticed the salary increase due to the lower federal withdrawals because of the new tax bill. Nobody cares about some prostitute and the ridiculous scandal surrounding how she does her business. Everybody’s individual paycheck matters more to them.

  1. Part of me also thinks tariffs could’ve helped. It had felt like he’d abandoned the image he had when campaigning and was just governing like any other Republican would. This is a signal to some voters that “see? He didn’t forget about us.”

    1. I agree. Here in Illinois there is the added issue of the steel plant that’s being reopened. It’s the hard work of the Dem legislature but it happened right after the announcement about the tariffs, so people are crediting Trump. Our state legislature kicks ass, I’m very proud of it. I hope we can get the message out before the election.

      1. I know there were plenty of Democrats here who approved (including me and Sherrod Brown.) I approve of him more since then, although I still don’t like him of course. But I’m pleasantly surprised he kept a campaign promise!

IOKIYAR. There are many other things I’m morally outraged over. Blech.

  3. Rasmussen began running rolling poll that gets averages every 4 days or so, that never dips below 47% and is above all the other polls. When Nate Silver’s site began including this with every average(even with a low weight), the Trump approval average on fivethirtyeight jumped above 40%. I think it is a polling artifact. Realclearpolitics includes the same poll but doesn’t even re-weight it.

  4. Looks like this is just a statistical deviation in NBC which has varied between 38 and 44% in the past I don’t think this is meaningful. Several other polls seem to hold steady below 40%. The poll average seems to go up just a little since January, but again I think this might well be from throwing these new rolling polls in. Trump has a floor and a ceiling, and I’m not sure anything he every does really effects this beyond statistical noise.
