Nabucco

I’m at the opera with a long-time reader of this blog. We are seeing Nabucco, an opera I love because it contains my favorite “Va, pensiero.” It was long considered (maybe mistakenly, but who cares?) a hymn of hopeful nationalism. And we all know how I feel about nationalist, especially now that it’s agonizing.

I have mixed feelings about Nabucco, some great stuff but the female lead, Abigaille, has a distinguished history as a voice killer (some of it is purely insane) and quite probably helped cut the career of the soprano who first sang it short (she later became the second Mrs Verdi).
No matter the original intention va pensiero became a de facto symbol of Italian nationalism.

Abigaille was out of this world. An incredibly talented woman.

You asked me to read a post; I think about Putin. I cannot figure out which post it is. Maybe I am not remembering the subject of the post. Can you please remind me.
