The Stack

“Mommy, what is this in the picture?”

“It’s a train.”

“No, Mommy! This isn’t a train. It doesn’t have a stack, see?”

  1. Hardly surprising, since after all these years ALL of the train images presented to children (book illustrations, cartoons, even miniature train rides in the park) are variations of the classical steam locomotive. (Google “children’s train images” and you’ll get a hundred pictures with no diesel engine in sight.)

Apparently diesel engines look too much like boxes to give any visual personality to.

At least today’s children’s books don’t show model T Fords and biplanes in their illustrations!
