OK, this does not sound like an idea coming from a mentally stable individual:
The woman who has accused President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee of sexual assault all but ruled out appearing at an extraordinary Senate hearing scheduled for next week to hear her allegations, insisting on Tuesday that the F.B.I. investigate first.
Why the FBI? Why not the CIA, the Interpol, the MI5, and the Mossad all together? What is it that the FBI can possibly investigate here?
I just read that the woman asked for it because she has been the subject of death threats and has been forced to leave her home for security’s sake. When I first heard about it, I thought it was a little crazy myself and am having a second thought about it — also after reading how some Republican Senators seemed to be approaching the matter.

I think that the accuser was very conflicted about whether to go public, but got pushed into the spotlight by people with other agendas who didn’t have her best interest at heart (very much like Anita Hill got pushed into the Clarence Thomas hearings in 1991), and now she’s scared and is trying to back out.
As for being “the subject of death threats,” what did she expect? Doesn’t EVERYBODY know that in 2018 if you inject yourself publicly in a major national political controversy, your social media accounts explode with all sorts of violently hateful threats and obscenities? (According to Clarissa, she also gets hateful feedback regularly for the tame opinions she posts here.)
Her highly-experienced anti-Trump activist lawyer got ahead of her client when she (the lawyer) announced boldly several days ago that the accuser wanted a public hearing. So now the lawyer is trying to find a graceful exit by making a demand (for a seventh FBI clearance check on Kananaugh) that she knows will never be granted.
If the accuser doesn’t show up for the congressional hearing next week, Kavanaugh will probably be confirmed in short order.
As usual, the Democrats couldn’t do ANYTHING right! 🙂

Minor correction: The lawyer is actually demanding a “full FBI investigation,” not another clearance check. The lawyer knows that FBI criminal investigations are done ONLY if a federal crime is suspected, which is obviously not the case here. So it’s a no-go from the start.

The witnesses. Otherwise it’s just a hearing before a tendentious panel. She/lawyers are talking about getting impartial assessment of statements.

The strategy is clearly to drag it out until a democratic Congress will be elected. Then it will preclude Trump from getting through any other nominee. Then it will be presidential election time and the Dem president together with the Dem Congress will place their own nominee. It’s a good strategy, a long game, I like that. But that doesn’t mean the particulars of the strategy are any less funny.

That is very manipulative and dishonest. She’s not a teenage girl now and he wasn’t a man then. If he was involved in this he was a minor (unless I’m wildly mistaken about their relative ages) and having the FBI investigate a minor’s actions over 30 years ago…. no.

Come on, this entire situation is a ludicrous farce. The Republicans don’t care about anything except getting Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. The Democrats don’t care about anything except derailing his nomination any way they can, no matter how dishonorable. The accuser’s lawyer’s only interest is to try to represent her client while the 51-year-old grown woman chickens out and wishes she’d never come forward.
The only person in this comedy who comes across as an adult is — DONALD TRUMP!! I don’t know who or what got to him, but he’s sounding uncharacteristically reasonable and presidential (not a single tweet or rant), for the first time since he announced his candidacy in 2015.
The Republicans are going to win this one, because their opposition is being very stupid, even for Democrats. Kavanaugh will be nominated out of the committee by the end of next week, and seated on the Court when it convenes in October.

It was worth trying even if Kavanaugh does squeak by. It energizes the base to see the party fight and not just meekly accept things. This is America. Nobody likes to be on the side of meek losers.

1/ They’re vetting character, not sitting on a Title IX panel or in a DA’s office, although many seem to think the latter
2/ Did you see much more recent e-mails about the hostesses, masseuses, etc. and the dice game, and how he & friends were to make sure their wives did not know what they were up to…
3/ Did you see the WaPo op-ed or poem “Some impersonal verbs, conjugated by gender”-worth looking up
