Can anybody update me on what is happening in South Africa? I saw images of buildings on fire and people running away with gigantic boxes. Does anybody know what’s going on?

Wasn’t there a recent reader from SA? I’d like to know more… I’ve read that a former president was arrested and the looting began after that but have no idea what the connection is.
Also, somebody who does understand the connection would probably have a hard time explaining it briefly…

I do suspect that Chinese exported covid policies are going to be setting off turmoil in many third world countries… so I’ll be expecting lots more of whatever is going on there.
Hi there, I’m from south Africa Johannesburg. It’s absolut mayhem here. They are looting & torching all businesses. Several people have lost their lives from the violence. The President has Declared a State if Emergency. we are all urged to stay in doors and only go out for essential goods and supplies. 2 if our major banks have closed all branches in Kwa-Zulu Natal and some in Johanessburg. MTN our second larges cellular network service provider gas shut all stores. Clicks and Dischem (General pharmaceutical ) following suit.
And that’s condensing a very frightening situation. You can hear explosions and gunfire. The smell of gas etc in the air from the torching. The Rand has plummeted. It is a tragedy to say the least.

Some reports are saying the looters are rioting because former President Jacob Zuma has been arrested and imprisoned for corruption and embezzlement of millions of tax payers money, and tgey are ANC and Jacob Zuma supporters, other reports say it’s because of our level 4 lockdown that has been extended due to the high volumes if new cases and deaths with the 3rd wave. So I can’t verify which is the truth. But in saying that they only started rioting when Mr Zuma was imprisoned.
