Decoy

I have a theory that there are several US writers who pretend to be outlandishly woke on social media and in interviews so that the mobs would leave them alone and let them publish whatever they want. Stephen King, Jonathan Franzen, and Elizabeth George come to mind as being in this group. George has been writing very raw, very terrifying stuff about the sainted “immigrant people of color” for years. And nobody touches her when other writers – both more and less famous – have been pilloried for one millionth of what she routinely writes. In her most recent novel, a bunch of completely horrid, barbaric immigrants who can never be integrated into any civilization live in a building called “the Bronte House.” I don’t care if it’s an accident or not but it definitely makes a point.

Stephen King is clearly taking the piss with his woke posturing. Franzen has avoided being demolished for his latest novel through a spate of exaggeratedly woke interviews.

  1. Not decoys: Object lessons.

“Political correctness is communist propaganda writ small. In my study of communist societies, I came to the conclusion that the purpose of communist propaganda was not to persuade or convince, not to inform, but to humiliate; and therefore, the less it corresponded to reality the better. When people are forced to remain silent when they are being told the most obvious lies, or even worse when they are forced to repeat the lies themselves, they lose once and for all their sense of probity. To assent to obvious lies is in some small way to become evil oneself. One’s standing to resist anything is thus eroded, and even destroyed. A society of emasculated liars is easy to control. I think if you examine political correctness, it has the same effect and is intended to.”

      1. “Emperor’s New Clothes”

The woke version of that story is that a nudophobic child refused to validate the Emperor’s new finery and afterwards could not find work or engage in any economic activity whatsoever.
He died homeless a few years later and everybody congratulated themselves on their allyship of the royal exhibitionist…

  2. If they know they are lying when they spout the woke nonsense, they are poisoning themselves. Jordan Peterson talks about how the first thing we need to do to live a life worth living is to only speak the truth, which begins by first trying to say what one knows to be a lie.

  3. “pretend to be outlandishly woke”

Simplest explanation: The Woke don’t actually read books, they only monitor media (especially social media).
As long as an authors doesn’t mouth heresy there, they can write whatever they want.
The flip side is that people who can and do read books are much less likely to fall prey to wokeness (which demands rapid and unthinking response.

    1. Totally makes sense. I wouldn’t be able to do it because I’d jusy explode but I think they probably just hire an eager grad student to run their social media.
