This kind of life has many attractive qualities. You never have to grow up. You can pick up, move on, start anew every time something goes wrong. There are feelings of omnipotence, endless possibilities. People truly feel godlike. It’s very much like a cult. You look at it from the outside, and it’s obvious that there’s a cup of poisoned Kool aid at the end of the line but people in the cult are radiant with joy even 5 minutes before the poison arrives.

I think it’s a bit like the USSR (life could be pretty sweet for the higher party members… until… it suddenly wasn’t) but it totally sucks for most people (who can’t turn off their humanity in the way you need to in order to thrive in that system.

A lifetime of propaganda will go a long way toward making people suppress their natural instincts in order to perceive themselves as a “good person.” I’ve been hearing about the ickiness of national identity and the virtues of being a global citizen since I entered the public school system at age seven.

Huh. Perhaps that’s one of the perks of Orthodoxy– we’re reminded a lot that thinking of yourself as “a good person” is pretty much always just demons whispering in your ear. Understanding yourself to be the chief among sinners is the first step toward salvation. You can’t be saved if you think you’re already doing great 😉
