The OpenAI Example

Going back to the subject of over-representation, it’s curious but not remotely surprising that the scientists at the center of the OpenAI scandal – Altman, Brockman and Sutskever – are Jewish. And half of the company’s employees are Israeli.

This isn’t just IQ. These are the people with both brain power and vision. Jews are very over-represented among this small group.

  1. My current theory is that the category of determinedly Christ-free people who are also utopiansts will be over-represented in both the AI and the most toxic leftist scandals, crimes, and movements.

  2. “OpenAI, for all its noble aspirations, is obsessed with maintaining secrecy, protecting its image, and retaining the loyalty of its employees” (from MIT Technology Review)

What a misnomer for such a company!

  3. Saw a VC writing recently about grifter artistes selling dogshit with new tech hype that hides broken legacy business models …

With OpenAI, there’s a small skunkworks core, which does engineering rather than science, and the rest of it could pass for a late 1980s/early 1990s standards organisation with new hype models.

Once the OpenAI board figured out they bring very little “value add” to the deal, they did what any standards group does when they’ve lost the people who gave the org a reason to exist.

They try to get them back regardless of the crap that’s been pulled, because without the wizard, who needs to go to Oz?

OpenAI maintained secrecy because without the magnificent wizard act, nobody really needed OpenAI as an organisation.

It has a “bus count” of as many as three, so what happened when the board threw two of them under the bus (or at least one decided under the bus was better)?

Don’t mistake OpenAI’s skunkworks engineering for the legacy pseudo-standards bureaucracy layered in tech hype that is the rest of it.
