Movie Notes: Matt Walsh’s Am I Racist?
Long story short, people, it’s better than What Is a Woman? We laughed until our facial muscles hurt. It’s really really funny.
Quite a few people attended the very first showing in our town. 1 pm on Thursday is not a popular time slot but people showed up and weren’t sorry.
Do yourselves a favor and go. It’s really funny. Even N who knows absolutely nothing about these Saira Raos and Jussie Smolletts was in stitches the entire time.
JD Obama
JD Vance unveiled his plan on Ukraine. It’s identical to Obama’s Ukraine policy. Giving Russia everything it wants and freezing the conflict along the existing control lines. The Obama policy failed, as we have all seen. It will fail again.
The funny part is that nobody can afford to notice that JD Vance is plagiarizing Obama. The left can’t let the sainted Obama be tarnished by an association with JD Vance and the right is eager to get played again in return for some clumsy flattery.
The Unpatriotic Turn
I’m obviously opposed to mass migration but what does Vance think is the most prosperous country on Earth if not the US?
This is one of the reasons I think he’s a plant. He’s moving the Trump campaign in a subtly unpatriotic direction. The message is always that this country is worse than some unnamed others.
The far left used to coalesce around this kind of anti-Americanism. The US was always guilty of everything, doing everything wrong. But at least the left always named the alternative that it considered to be better. The USSR, then Sweden (in its utterly imaginary form), sometimes Canada. This gave some room to disproving America’s assumed inferiority by demonstrating that the USSR was enormously worse and the Sweden that the left imagined did not exist.
Vance’s unpatriotism is more insidious. We never learn whom he considers to be more prosperous, with a more successful immigration policy and a better functioning economy. America is vaguely bad because it is. The yardstick that measures this badness is hidden or non-existent.
I was on the left for years, and this habit of contemptuous sniping at America is very familiar. I don’t think Vance is doing it on purpose. I believe, instead, that he picked it up from his far-left wife and it became second nature.
Current Situation
Public education is being dismantled through disinvestment, budget cuts, and left-wing ideology that forces public universities to accept utterly unprepared and incapable students in the name of diversity.
Socialized medicine, where it exists, is dismantled through austerity. Euthanasia is hailed as a wonderful solution to the healthcare systems that don’t have resources to treat patients.
Populations that are capable of noticing these changes and being unhappy about them are being replaced with populations that aren’t.
Policing is being not so much dismantled as reoriented towards silencing any unhappiness among the public with these developments.
The free press is fully dedicated to distracting attention from these happenings.
No Cred
Most of our student advisors quit because the pay is pathetic. But we can’t hire anybody new because we require a Master’s degree, and people with advanced degrees can easily find a higher-paying job in the region.
It’s not a Master’s in any particular field, so it’s not a specific skill we are trying to get. And it’s not stupid credentialism, either. Credentialism is largely a myth.
But we know who gets BAs at our school (see previous post), and we understandably refuse to hire them.
Love Conquers All
There is this woman who was single her whole life, always lived alone. She retired at 67, and went into a deep depression. There was nothing to get up for, nothing to look forward to.
At 74, she woke up, started a real-life relationship with a 24-year-old handyman and an online affair with a 47-year-old Middle Eastern man. Long story short, she’s out of her entire life savings plus loans she recently took out to the tune of $450,000.
On the positive side, this is a person who never mastered smartphones or PowerPoint but newfound love made her learn how to buy Bitcoin and transfer it overseas.
I’ve known her for over 15 years, and I’m in shock because it’s one thing when you see it on TV and quite another when it’s somebody you know.
Moral of the story: don’t wait too long to start living your dream life or you might be surprised by the results and not in a good way.
She Knows
Oh, she knows, she knows. She’s not telling the voters because she’d lose if she did. But she knows. If only there was somebody on stage with her who had the discipline and the motivation to explain clearly what she’s going to do and why that’s bad.
Who Lost the Debate?
I don’t know if Harris was given the questions in advance but these were extremely predictable questions. There were no surprises at all.
The important thing, though, is the litany of lies that Harris unleashed during the debate. No hoax was too ridiculous for her to unspool. This is what awaits us when she’s elected. Endless lies, hoaxes, and a denial of reality.
We all lost yesterday. We lost big.
Culture Shock
The Ukrainian instructor is shocked by the cognitive limitations of the students. She’s used to a model where people pass demanding entrance exams to attend college, and as much as I warned her that we accept everybody in the most literal sense, it really took her aback to see reality.
“I asked a student why she decided to learn Ukrainian,” the instructor shared, “and she says it’s because she wants to be a dentist. Not a dentist in Ukraine but simply a dentist.”
“Well,” I explained, “you speak with your mouth, and that’s where the teeth are.”
The instructor started to laugh nervously and then saw how completely serious I was.
