Imagine a group of 350 academics gathered two weeks after Trump swept the election. Imagine the moping, the drama, the self-aggrandizement, the apocalyptic hand-wringing, the endless repetition of pronouns and identity labels that is supposed to signal “resistance.”

After you’ve imagined this, you will realize why I feel cynical and low-energy. All I want to do is go to my room and read Trollope but instead I’m tortured by one of the most embarrassing land acknowledgements I’ve ever heard and, believe me, I’ve heard way too many.

The keynote speaker is Canadian, and Canadian academics have become way more cringe than even the American ones.

Ah, I was going to tell you early today about my favorite response to a land acknowledgment: When do you plan to give it back?

Followed closely with “So you are just rubbing their noses in the steal?”

It was all said earnestly, and so was very amusing.

Our keynote speaker was Canadian, and Canadians are really on a whole other level with their land acknowledgement obsession. I experienced great depths of vicarious embarrassment for the poor speaker.

God help Canadians, for they have really lost their way.

Hmmm. I suspect the proportion of Canadians that buy into the land acknowledgement nonsense is roughly the same as the proportion of Americans that support reparations ;-D

I respect patriotism but Canada is a lot farther gone than the US. Just look at COVID. We were out in restaurants and gyms while Canadians sat in lockdowns and narced on their neighbors for daring to step outside.

Hmmm, don’t know how much Canadian history and geography you were given but most of us have total contempt for not only the Laurentian elite, but the Liberal government, and their associated weak males and radical feminists. It would be like assuming that the sick emotional garbage of the bi-coastal elite somehow encompasses the entire American dream.

And as for Trollope, have not read it, but males are typically not only the protecters but also the romantics ;-D

Somebody has kept Trudeau in power this long. Why did it take Canadians this long to finally start wanting to get rid of him?

C’mon be fair. You have to know that there is no way to tell the truth without being accused of being a black-hearted misogynistic swine or worse. But even my 96 year old Mom wants him gone, mind you, she doesn’t czre much for Chuckie III either ;-D
