Our British friends have become so censored and policed that it’s impossible to find out what is actually being discovered regarding the Southport massacre that occurred last July. From what I understand, Britain’s current PM is responsible for the terrorist’s family being in the UK. Keir Starmer apparently defended Rudakubana’s father in his (Starmer’s) capacity as a Human Rights lawyer. The father seems to have been complicit in the Rwandan genocide, which is why it was so crucial to Labour to keep him in the UK.

This is why I consider anybody who unironically uses the expression “human rights” to suffer from cognitive retardation.

In any case, there’s no discussion in the UK. People only mumble that there are things they could tell but they won’t because you know. The incredible degree of censorship and fear is such that I say “God Bless America” whenever I read anything about Great Britain.

    Well that’s awkward…..

    I’m reminded of the stabbings last year in Dublin… rumors were that the PM at the time had been personally involved in the Algerian who did it being able to stay in Ireland where, after 15 or so years he had never had any kind of employment and apparently needs Arabic translations of everything in court….

    The name was kept out of the news entirely and the establishment was trying to shame people for ‘assuming’ the assailant was Algerian before the name was finally revealed a couple of days before Christmas…

      It’s such a contrast to read Trollope and then today’s news. All dignity, all independence are gone from the UK.

    In a slight defence of the UK position – I hadn’t heard this suggestion and I don’t want to until after the court case.

    We have fairly strong contempt of court laws which require jurors to only determine their verdict based on information presented in court, which is why the media are prohibited from sharing these details until after the court has ruled.

    There was also a deliberate delay in charging Axel Rudakubana with terrorism offences because the Crown Prosecution Service (who are the equivalent of the State Prosecutor – would that be District Attorney in USA?) were instructed to wait until after the Chris Kaba case had been decided because of the fear that a successful prosecution of a police officer for killing a murderous gang member who was trying to ram other officers with his car would cause police unrest.

    I will say that your comment explains quite why this has been so emotive to those in the know, but I do think it is better for the wheels of justice to grind slowly than not at all.

      Isn’t it easier to ask the jury to not access the media or sequester them if they are impotent to achieve this fear instead of shutting up the whole country?

      It’s a very bizarre logic where everybody is deprived of their right to speak because a tiny bunch of people refuse to exercise self-control and not access the media. This whole approach where millions should be inconvenienced for the sake of a dozen of snowflakes is incomprehensible to me.

        I don’t think you realise how crap the UK “justice” system is. The conservatives totally fouled up all public services by talking about austerity whilst Boris Johnson was spaffing taxpayers money into every covid-leaning, sustainability-promoting orifice he could find. Truss was a positive attempt who had absolutely no political ability whatsoever (and I do not want to internet diagnose, but of she was male, well the answer is obvious).

        There is no way to sequester people who haven’t yet been chosen – and won’t be for months or years due to the delays in the prosecution system. If we had a good process, people would face trial within 2 months and therefore the answers would be public a lot earlier.

          But if it takes years, the jurors will have forgotten whatever they read in the media about the case all that time ago.

          Make them take an oath under penalty of perjury that they don’t have outside information about the case before serving and that’s it. But punishing the entire country because somebody several years from now might be inconvenienced, I’m sorry, I don’t get it. It’s not rational.

          Also, the percentage of people who don’t follow the news at all is very high, so finding disengaged jurors should be easy.

      Freedom of information and freedom of speech are just as important to a democratic polity as due process in judicial proceedings. Or at least, this is what we would expect in an actual democracy, not one that is such in name only.

      Citizens have every right to know what ethnicity Rudakubana is, whether his father was indeed involved in the Rwandan genocide, whether Sir Keir Starmer acted in his defence and in what capacity. There is nothing “emotive” about any of this: it is in fact the bare minimum level of transparency and accountability rightfully demanded by any mature, democratic citizenry.

      The fact that not only the powers that be but also many so-called “right-thinking”, self-appointed guardians of the democratic process seem to agree with the nostrum “nothing to see here, move along” is a potent sign of how deep into the abyss of authoritarianism and tyrannical overreach batshit bonkers Britain has fallen.

    I don’t normally set much stock in what the Daily Mail reports (it usually takes a very sensationalized approach), but even they say that it is not true:

    “The erroneous allegations made against Sir Keir centre on a High Court ruling dating from 2003. The judge, Mr Justice Collins, examined cases brought by six asylum seekers who were challenging parts of an immigration law brought in by Tony Blair’s government earlier that year.

    All six were anonymised in the ruling. However, none of the six match the nationality and gender of Mr Rudakubana Sr, the Rwandan father of the Southport attacker who settled in the UK more than 20 years ago.

    Sir Keir, who at the time was a senior human rights barrister at Left-wing Doughty Street Chambers, represented five of the six applicants.

    The High Court document makes clear that Sir Keir’s clients were a 16-year-old Ethiopian girl, a 26-year-old Iranian man and two Angolan men aged 22 and 33.

    The sixth party – the only Rwandan national involved in the case – was a 42-year-old woman.

    She was from the Rwandan Hutu majority ethnic group, and told officials she ‘had been living in a camp run by Rwandan soldiers since 1994 and was subjected to regular rapes and beatings at the hands of Tutsis’.

    She fled Rwanda with the help of her uncle and arrived in Britain by air from Kampala, Uganda, on January 7, 2003. She claimed asylum three days later.

    No Rwandan men were involved in the High Court challenge.

    A separate team of lawyers represented the sixth applicant in the case, a 20-year-old Iraqi Kurdish man.”

      The problem isn’t whether Starmer represented the killer’s father or not. Lawyers represent even serial killers because it’s their job. The scandal is that people are terrified to mention these allegations or anything connected to the murder. Wikipedia is still stuck on “motive for the attack is unknown.”

      the UK is not a large country and it’s already very crowded…. why does it feel the need to take in people from everywhere, including countries with which is has no significant history.

      Surely it would make more sense for the Angolans to be in Portugal and the Rwandan in a francophone area.

    I’m not sure of “appreciate” is the right word, but I like this take on it.

    I have no idea (or special interest) if this was political or drug-related as some say…. but russia is just eating through its seed corn, not just in terms of population but in almost all fields…

    If Canada and England are leading in the quest to eliminate the idea of different cultures and languages as a factor of human existence then russia is leading the quest to have no artistic culture… AFAICT there are no serious writers or musicians or…. anything and that’s how the kremlin likes it: Comrade Gitler and Shaman for everyone!

      They keep throwing people out of windows and it’s become completely normalized.

      It’s a culture that desperately tries to commit suicide and these window situations are a sign of that.

        I’ve long said russia has devolved to a point where it’s not so much a country or culture anymore as it is a death cult.

        Personally I blame the leadership less than the bovine population that enables and empowers them. I’ve actually gotten to the point where I despise ‘the russian people’ far more than I do the government. russia has always been run by violent psychotic sociopaths so what do you expect from them? It’s the passive apathy of the public that creates that and _still_ has no problem with it that I hate most.
