The current Western approach is that if you look your enemy in the eye subserviently and wag your tail endearingly, he’ll be persuaded to be nice to you. The enemy can be an Islamist terrorist or a Russian warmonger. The response is always that of a tail-wagging, drooling, self-effacing subservience.

Maybe I’m too hopeful, but I think Russia’s economy will crash, especially if oil prices keep going down. I don’t see how they have more than one or two years left before a massive crash.

It won’t change anything…. as a russian told me elsewhere on the internet russians are very proud of being able to survive poverty and hardship. If anything total economic collapse will make the government stronger – protests happen when things aren’t so bad and/or when they first take a hit after a period of relative prosperity.
The biggest protests in modern russia happened not long after its economic peak and the government apparently decided then and there that the cure for that is to crash living standards.
Also, if russia does crash then the west will rush in to save it (and earn more undying hatred from russians in the process).
It’s a non-western mentality that has to be understood on its own terms.
