Cognitive Inequality

It’s very dangerous when people who are cognitively unable to understand technology have AI unleashed on them:

AI tells people what they want to hear. It feeds the ego that, in our times, is already overinflated. Many of us are utterly unable to resist the lure of hearing their desires pronounced valid by a supposedly unbiased, superior intelligence. The world is confusing and unkind to millions of such people. AI mirrors the contents of their disordered minds back at them, and they are soothed by the illusion that everything is finally right with them.

Cognitive inequality becomes more important and noticeable than ever before.

  1. Just today a colleague at work told me he uncovered a new pattern in prime numbers (he told me about it and no he didn’t). Sadly ChatGPT seems to be confirming his illusion that his “work” might have some impact on cryptography or on quantum computers, and he believes it. I feel sorry for him and I tried to be both friendly and honest, but it was difficult, he believes ChatGPT more than me. These LLMs are dangerous and it should urgently be contained and forced to be truthful instead of nice with people.

      1. Number theory *is* fun. My kiddo just wrote a program to brute-force compute all the prime numbers between 0 and 3000 on his graphing calculator. Because that’s what he does in his spare time.

I don’t let him use the AI. Feels like he’d be missing out on all the rewards that way. Like reading the solution to the crossword instead of doing the puzzle.

    1. The LLMs can’t be forced to be truthful. Clarissa can elaborate on that since she’s so cognitively blessed.

  2. Most people are not able to “cognitively understand technology”, including you. You’re not a mathematician or a computer programmer.

Welcome the Scam Economy… almost everything people are supposed to like and support ends up victimizing people that need a little help to get through life.

Some just need relatively stable institutions and others require a lot more but the Scam Economy is determined to drive them into the streets and fetanyl (or whatever drug horror comes next) addiction.

I really did not want to grow old in a horrific dystopia run by grifters…. but here we are!
