  1. Pure evil. The one thing I dislike about Texas is no public land. It’s been sold off to private interests so you have to pay to play to do anything (hunting, etc.). Now this model’s being adopted for western states as well.

    The state of “conservatism” in this country. Can’t even be bothered to fucking conserve land.

      Have you ever considered that if a pro-Israeli God ever existed, He could have simply wiped out all the Jew-hating foes with a frown or a wave of His mighty hand? He wouldn’t have needed to waste time forcing a far more powerful and relevant nation like the United States to come to the rescue of such a tiny experiment in an only-one-religion-allowed-in-charge nation like Israel?

      America has strongly (and correctly) supported Israel since its creation in the late 1940s because of two valid down-to-earth reasons — because Israel, for all its faults, has always been a shining demonstration of Western democracy in a land ruled by blood-thirsty barbarism, and because it’s been in America’s post-WWII interest to act as an international protector of democratic countries when feasible.

      If you want to watch an Academy Award winning fantasy about God’s heavy-handed direct intervention in favor of one religion, rent a DVD copy of the 1950s movie “The Ten Commandments.”

  4. Ugh. They’re marketing this as a solution to expensive real estate. Which is total BS. It’s a gift to mining and logging companies.

    The US has the highest ratio of housing-to-people ever right now. The fact that more than half of us can’t afford to live anywhere is completely artificial, and not a matter of shortage.

    1. Absolutely! It’s yet another housing bubble, completely artificial. And the results will be as bad as of all the previous housing bubbles. The prices charged for housing are completely insane and do not reflect its actual value.

        Propping up prices by federalizing most mortgages was the fedgov’s strategy for keeping boomer asset prices from collapsing.

        Inflation is the root cause here, and it’s a political hot potato because if you address inflation, the whole debt economy collapses instantly, and the US dollar goes *poof*. Default and currency reset, and the economic slough of despond that comes with it. Nobody elected is going to support that. It’s what needs to happen, but they won’t do it.

        However: there are plenty of other ways to get at the specific problem of overpriced housing without going after inflation: deport illegals; investigate and prosecute occupancy fraud (this may be happening, but only at the $$$ end, and not at the working-class housing end where it’d make the most difference); go after STVRs for tax and zoning violations; graduated property tax on residential properties; investigate and prosecute Section 8 fraud…

        …and possibly the biggest one, which requires explanation because *nobody* is talking about it: Since the last crash, the fedgov backs most mortgages. Since 2020, they’ve been doing the same thing in mortgages that the .gov has been doing with student loans: deferring payment. There are a LOT of people out there, particularly in the FHA program, who haven’t been paying the mortgage for going on five years now. And they haven’t been foreclosed on. All we’d have to do to make a tremendous amount of affordable housing available immediately is end that. Fedgov has been covering their asses for them with no publicity, to delay the real estate bubble popping.
