They assume that russian and western values are generally the same and that when russian politicians say unhinged imperialistic things that they’re deviating from the norm and with a little patience will see sense and reboard the lib-dem train.
Almost nothing will make them understand the truth: russia has been, for centuries, an aggressive empire devoted to the idea of endless military expansion and it’s the occasional use of lib-dem rhetoric that is the deviation.

This is really a golden opportunity for us to walk away from that parasitic country. The tension is this: Trump is happy with being done after destroying Iran’s nuclear program. Whereas Israel wants regime change and all that it entails.
