To recap a day-long fountain of vitriol, Murray got in the way of people feeling sorry for themselves, and they can’t get over it.
What Murray doesn’t understand is that it’s precisely because life is easy and good that people need to pretend everything is terrible. If there were real hardship, they’d do the exact opposite.
All I’ll say is that if Murray thinks it’s easy to find a 48 hour a week job in retail in 2025, he’s not aware of the reality on the ground. Unless where I live is an outlier and I am the one who’s unaware.

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about in that tweet. 48 hour weeks in retail lol. Promotion to assistant manage after one year, double lol.
Just goes to show that the smartest of boomers are still, well, boomers. Their entire mythos will crumble if they acknowledge somebody somewhere has it harder than they did.

I didn’t see that thing about getting promoted in a year since I just glanced lol. Yeah, totally clueless.
I wouldn’t say boomers are always like this considering I never hear stuff like this from my parents. But there’s a certain type of person who hasn’t had to buy a house or find a job anytime recently and it shows.

Not all boomers, of course. But enough to make a generalization.

We keep our boomer parents informed so they don’t sound like this 😉
My inlaws, on the other hand… 🙄

You can certainly work 48hrs/wk in retail if you have 2 retail jobs… which is what you’ll need to pay rent working in retail.

The point is that you won’t get benefits because no one job will give you the required hours.

I have worn my vocal cords raw trying to explain to people that all those enviable European job benefits are fake because most people are kept on part-time contracts on purpose to avoid having to pay those benefits.
Those benefits make the situation of working people WORSE. They have destroyed the job market in Spain and Portugal. But it’s impossible to get through to people on the subject.
“Ooh! In Spain they give you days off for painful menstruation!”
Yes, but you’ll be over 50 when you get a chance to get such a job, so it’s all moot.

You definitely don’t need that many hours to pay rent working in retail if you’re childless and live somewhere relatively affordable. And if you have two jobs, how are you supposed to get promoted to manager in a year in both of them?
