I ask in complete sincerity. There must be something very cultural going on here that I don’t get.
I read the comments, and they seem very aggressive.

There’s no real joke. Everything normal that white people do or say has to be pathologized, ostensibly for comedic effect, but there’s always some hate simmering underneath.
Having said that, my guess is that in this case the idea could be that “let’s grab some lunch” is a vague, non-committal phrase which may be perceived as insincere. Something you say to be polite but with no real intent to follow through. Which is a white people thing? I dunno, I learn new things every day.

Really weird. People get triggered by the most anodyne, simple things. It’s like they live in a different affective regime where everything is tinged with resentment.

White people be like, “Hello, it’s nice to meet you.”
