I’m being ravaged by a major heatwave but I did all I could to sound alive.
We are doing a live stream on Sunday, too, because the media group is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Thirty years ago, I thought today I’d be a professional translator of fiction in America and my wonderful husband would drive me around in a white car. I’m not a translator but close enough, the husband is as wonderful as planned but his car is sea-wave blue-green, and I actually learned to drive myself (which was never the plan).

Women leaders tend to prioritize keeping the peace over truth, which is why ‘radical empathy’ so often gets twisted into nonsense like this. The Iowa school board is wall-to-wall AWFLs, and the education system is overwhelmingly female-run. What do you think?

There’s so much crazy stuff about this guy. He cost his previous job almost a million dollars in lawsuits. And still he was hired. He had endless accusations of harassment and corruption. The people who hired him knew all that. And none of it made a difference.

Not a single member of the school board will resign. I’ve remarked on this before, but it’s disheartening to see the decline of a society where leaders no longer step down after serious failures. It’s all about making excuses and blaming others. They’re suing the vetting agency when the honorable thing to do would be for the entire board to resign in disgrace.
We always had elites but today’s elites have no sense of noblesse oblige. Their only goal is pure resource extraction. Loot the empire’s coffers before it completely crumbles. It’s everywhere.

Also, how do you drive 50-60mph over the speed limit? It’s insane to do this on the freeway, but to do it on a surface street is downright terroristic.

I love it, love it, love it. Back in the USSR, this whole genre wasn’t allowed to exist. When the USSR finally fell apart, this novel was one of the very first translated into Russian. It was explosively successful because we couldn’t believe this kind of books were even real.
Maybe I should reread.

The characters are timeless. I still know people like this and so do you, and only cosmetic details are different in the present era.
