The best for you would be a state you have little to no connection to or knowledge of. You never would have chosen southern Illinois on your own….

Tragically, our university is going to the absolute dogs. I’m on the faculty senate, and the changes we hear announced are ridiculous.

I’d say Alaska is THE state for you. Great climate, great wilderness, local Orthodox Church with history and tradition, few people around…
Plus, it would benefit from an injection of high-level scholarship in the humanities!

Everybody I’ve ever known who’s lived in Alaska… has either moved back to Alaska or wants to move back to Alaska. Cannot imagine it myself: too cold! But for them that like it…

Michigan Upper Peninsula. It has a 6-month winter, plenty of snow and mild summers. Very friendly people and small communities.

Any red state with a good conservative/Christian university. I don’t know your preference for the weather, but unless you like cold and to drive in snow, I’d look for the states in the southern part of the US. I thought you liked Florida. New Hampshire is a good state, politically, but I don’t know what universities they have that would suit you, and their winters tend to be cold and snowy.

A lot of towns or metros are great but in crappy states. Or the state is great but the town sucks.
For climate, I’d look right along the border.

U. of Wyoming, Laramie. You’ll love the climate: as Ukrainian as you can get in the lower 48. As the trucker cap I bought at Cheyenne Sporting Goods in ’85 was inscribed: “Wyoming is what America Was”.
Academics will be an improvement. Read anything by C.L. Rawlins, but I’d start with “Sky’s Witness”, and you’ll understand on a visceral level.

I think you would like Maine, but I may be projecting because I’m enamored with Portland and think everyone else should be too. There are several old colleges and universities in the coastal area and up toward Augusta, the climate is a relief for us summer haters, and the people seem largely independent both politically and temperamentally. And it is the most forested state in the Union, which is lovely even if academic jobs don’t grow on trees.

Wisconsin is nice. When I moved here (from Illinois) everyone told me I would hate it because the winters are so long and cold, but to me that’s one of the best parts of it.
