Do MAGAs Want War?

I don’t know how to put images into comments but this is from a young parishioner at my church. Not an online personality but a real young dude I know in RL. I snipped off identifying information because he’s a private person:

A hard-working young man. A graduate of my department. Recently married. Speaks several languages. Orthodox, very religious.

Every single time I talk to MAGAs either in RL or online, I hear how angry they are about the US bombing Iran. This is why I’m very puzzled by the suggestion that MAGAs want the US to invade other countries.

  1. having a hard time even defining the term MAGA here.

I don’t know anybody who self-identifies that way. I know a lot of people who voted for Trump, most of them with a smidgen of hope, and knowing it was better than any of the alternatives. Absolutely nobody who is one of those online borderline-schizos who believe with a religious fervor that everything Trump does is “part of the plan” and we should just “trust the plan”. I’d categorize most of the people I know IRL as on the political right. Some of them wouldn’t have been five or ten years ago, but these days, normal centrists from ten years ago are “conservatives”.

The working class is, by and large, pretty cynical about federal politics.

My dad wears the red hat sometimes because he enjoys pissing off uptight middle class liberals. He’s more optimistic than I am on Trump-related things, but even he pairs it with a giant chunk of rock-salt, knowing that the president is just one guy, and an election doesn’t replace the vast apparatus of federal government, which has its own agendas and loyalties.

I know zero people who want the US to get into a hot war with another country.

I don’t get it either beyond the fact that Iran is a russian ally and russia has coopted most of the American right so they’re completely useless on foreign policy.

They might also have some weird idea of Iranians being devout muslims when some survey recently showed an absolute majority no longer follows Islam in any real manner.

They also probably don’t like that it was done on Israeli orders (Israel definitely is the dominant partner in US-Israeli relations).

  3. Venezuela has oil. That’s all you really need to know about what Trump and his ilk are after. It’s looking increasingly like Iraq 2.0.

      1. Could absolutely be both. Many in the American oil industry salivate at the prospect of fully unvetted access to Venezuelan oil. Trump is also just absolutely obsessed with oil, so Venezuela is definitely very interesting to him and his oligarch friends.

  4. “Every single time I talk to MAGAs either in RL or online, I hear how angry they are about the US bombing Iran” yet polls show a majority of Trump voters were fine with this. This comports with my personal experience of most people not caring about it much. That’s not to say anyone is hungry for a full fledged war.

    1. Ditto. Nobody IRL has mentioned it since the week it happened. There was some worry at the time that we might get into another mideast war. Once that seemed like it wouldn’t happen… not interesting anymore.

Who’s claiming this? Such a bizarre suggestion.

    1. I don’t think ISR is innocent, but seriously, this is what Palestine publishes every time IDF moves a sneaker. “OMG CHILDREN”. Do we have any way to know it’s true? I am not inclined to reflexively believe anything coming from either side of that conflict. They are all lying bastards.

      1. Exactly. Muslim cultures appeal to children because they know this is what tugs on Western liberal ladies’ heartstrings. Within their own cultures, children aren’t nearly as precious as they are in Western cultures where fertility is lower and women are valued higher.

I’m tired of manipulations as it is, and not seeking to be manipulated more than I already am domestically. I’ll start listening once they start saying honestly what they want, which under no circumstances can be their own nation-state, human rights, or any of the Western shibboleths.
