One particularly enjoyable exchange at the meeting yesterday was this.

Me: Your proposal is based on the idea that change is always good and that our goal should be to pursue change, any change, at any cost, all of the time. That is not true, however.

Administrator: It is! Change is good. It’s great, in fact.

Me: Any change is good?

Administrator: Of course!

Me: Including climate change?

Administrator: Oh.

    Brilliant retort

    Another point worth pointing out is that in the 4.567 billion year history of the Earth, climate change is not only the norm, but a primary driver of evolution. For example, sexual reproduction was invented one billion years ago during a worldwide ice age, the Cryogenian

      I would have been incredibly gratified if the administrator could make this argument. But I knew he’d never depart from the orthodoxy on this subject. So the poor guy was trapped. In a trap of his own making.

      Immediately after, the crying and the running out of the room began. Honestly, even my kid doesn’t throw these tantrums any more.
