!?!? Kid, death screams are usually abrupt. Sustained screams, are most likely mating behavior involving cats, possibly raccoons, maybe foxes, or even coyote — but one should recognize the latter from classic Westerns ;-D

It is the beginning of mating seasons for foxes, after all. They sound very much like people getting assaulted.

There were six feral cats in my backyard this morning, making an unholy racket. I wish they were committing murder, because then there would be fewer tomorrow to piss on everything in my yard and carport. No such luck. Everything outside my door reeks, and I don’t even feed them!
Friggin mating season.

A season? Aren’t you in a warm climate?

Look, we’ve been here nearly a year, and only had this problem for the last few weeks, so I’m HOPING it’s seasonal! If not, I may have to start shooting cats. There is some jerk who feeds them on the public right-of-way about a block away, so there are dozens of them in the area. Everything immediately outside my house right now stinks of cat pee, and there are *three* pairs of kid shoes outside waiting for me to clean poop off of them. They treat our (small) yard like a public toilet.
Have been reading tons of internet posts about ways to deter this, and about to order a gallon of citrus oil to douse everything. If that doesn’t work… pellet gun next?

Well, unfortunately there is no real season; there is a peak in early Spring, but the females go into heat every couple of weeks until they are pregnant. And they can have several litters each year. My wife’s diluted vinegar, salt, and lemon scented dish soap herbicide, and our Lab, seemed to keep them down to a minor annoyance ;-D

The kids have been authorized to use waterguns with impunity. It hasn’t helped. I am now looking into motion-activated sprinklers, coyote urine, and just about any other weird thing suggested by the internet…
