Ice Age

Just fuck off at this point really, you know? I have no idea what glitched to send the prediction machine from overheating to overfreezing but nobody cares any more. Let’s move on.

  1. This is not a particularly new finding and there’s also no contradiction with global warming. “Milankovitch cycles” explain the cycle of ice ages as due to cyclical shifts in the Earth’s orbit that alter how much solar warming the Earth receives – that’s been known for many decades. The exact time of onset is affected by factors like land cover in high latitudes, and this “10,000 years to the next ice age” is hype about a statistical analysis that claims to pinpoint the time of onset more accurately.

But the whole process is being derailed by humanity burning half a trillion tons of coal since the industrial revolution, or however much it’s been. The carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere is what keeps Earth’s surface above freezing point, and despite diminishing returns to the effect, increasing the amount of CO2 by a third is enough to shift the long-term equilibrium temperature up by a few degrees.

    1. Are you suggesting that this is a settled matter, that there is no scientific question about the human impact?

      1. Essentially yes. The greenhouse properties of carbon dioxide are all based on basic physics and measurable properties. Nature in its totality is very complicated but certainly everything is broadly consistent with CO2 levels having been a driver of temperature increase in the way I described, and that does imply that significant net warming is ahead.

  2. Was this coming from the same people who put up a plack in the 60s/70s in the Glacier national park about how by the year 2000 it would have melted due to Global Warming?

Why the heck does anyone listen to or even consider those idiots even remotely credible.

Heck, I remember when it was save the whales. Then save the rain forest. Then save the starving kids in Africa. Then it was the Great Barrier Reef is dying and will soon be gone. And on and on and on. Those people are nothing but grifters of the absolute worst sort.

Absolute scum the lot of them.

      These are the people

Note that this one really is just science. There is no activism here, since no one is saying we must stop this ice age or prepare for it. But these people are climate scientists and so the vast majority of them do believe in global warming as real and a bad thing.

I never heard of Glacier National Park but a brief investigation suggests the signs were put up around 2004, and modified around 2019 to say the glaciers will disappear in “future generations” rather than by 2020. Glaciers around the world are shrinking, just not as fast as one USGS glaciologist thought in 2004.

Regarding all these areas of eco-doomer agitation (glaciers, reef, rainforest, whales, Africans), there’s almost always some truth to it. Heat melts glaciers and bleaches the reef, humans do chop down rainforests and hunt whales, and if you have more heat and more humans, those trends will be amplified. As for Africa, large parts of the continent seem to live on foreign aid. The human presence on Earth has been massively transformative, and eco-doomers offer an exaggerated version of it, but not wholly divorced from reality.

The source appears to be solid scientific reasoning until this clause was inexplicitly appended.

“But such a transition to a glacial state in 10,000 years’ time is very unlikely to happen because human emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere have already diverted the climate from its natural course, with longer-term impacts into the future,” added co-author Gregor Knorr from the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research.
