Q&A about the Blog Settings

I have received complaints from readers that the blog organization has become weird. One person says that the posts no longer appear in chronological order. Another pointed out that if you are not signed in, some posts are not even visible to you.

I want to reassure everybody that this is not happening in response to anything I did. I didn’t change anything. I didn’t introduce any new settings. I’m doing exactly what I’ve always done. WordPress routinely has these moments of strange experimentation where they mess up a well-functioning system in order to justify the existence of their team of employees.

This is very annoying. I hope it goes back to normal soon. I have been wondering why some good posts receive no comments, and now I realize that people are probably not even seeing them. The logic behind the suppression of some posts by WordPress is completely incomprehensible. I haven’t added any tags to posts in a very long time, so it’s not that. If anybody observes any logic behind this madness, please let me know.

    It is the opposite: If I am signed in, I see fewer posts. It completely baffles me that the public side would have more posts than the signed-in console, but that’s how it is, and a big part of why I don’t usually take the time to sign in, before commenting. About one post in ten…. I sign in and it’s gone. I can only access it while signed out. So weird.

      Okay, that’s really weird. I have absolutely no explanation. All I know is that I’m not doing anything at all new or unusual. I’m so done with the endless fussing with the algorithm that the managers of these apps so adore.

    Well, I have had posts vanish into the ether but always figured it was me being a technoserf, but sometimes I wondered ;-D

    FWIW I think it may have something to do with whatever template you’re using. I don’t have the same weird things come up when I go look at other people’s (Cliff’s for example) blogs on WP. On theirs, I can comment under my own signed-in handle from their main page, without going through WP reader console. Can’t do that with yours.

      If that’s true, that’s good news. I can simply change the template. I’m going to go see what Cliff’s template is and change mine to his.

        Ok, I put in a new template. Not that it is a fun, easy task. Please, people, let me know how the new template is stacking up.

          Took a minute and compared three pages of posts and… now I’m seeing exactly the same posts on the reader console as I am on the front page, nothing seems to be missing.

            Thank you so much for checking. I really appreciate it. The new format still looks kind of raw, but I’ll continue working on it. Especially since the picture supports all of the worst conclusions about my Yeti hair.

          …but I still can’t comment under my own username without going through the reader console. That’s not a feature I care hugely about, just an observation.

    The previous template was more convenient. Now I don’t see number of comments under each post, so don’t know re yesterday’s posts whether there was an interesting discussion.

    One also cannot see whether there are comments at all , on new posts either.
    There is this side bar with latest comments, but it cannot serve the same way as seeing the number of comments under each post does. 😦

    May be, in a few days returning to the previous template becomes possible? The last 2 templates on your blog were fine.

    The new template definitely seems inferior to the previous one, primarily because of the absence of number of comments feature as mentioned above, but also because the overall sans-serif fonts look too large on small screen devices (such as phones). I am probably too attached to your earlier format which besides looking more clean and traditional, distinguished your blog from various other tech blogs in appearance and spirit since the latter lean heavily towards sans-serif fonts.

      My $0.02

      While I do like the more sleek look of the new template, the older version was very much better. As people have noted, the biggest two issues seems to be not being able to see how many comments were placed on the articles.

      Then secondly the recent comment stream on the right side, which only currently shows about five. Which might be fine, except that occasionally I forget which post I am looking for when going back a day or so later, and thus tend to use a mix of how many comments if it was a very active post. Or if it has been a slow week, scroll through the recent comments to try to find one that looks familiar. To find the post in question.
