I am learning a lot of important things from the book Nothing Left.

For example, I’m sure you’ve noticed that professional politicians tend to look completely soulless. It’s like there is no there there. Nobody’s home. They’re glassy-eyed and devoid of normal human emotions.

Evan Barker explains that what a politician does all day every day is cold-calling. They call random rich people and ask for donations. Of course, I knew that politicians try to get donations, but I had no idea that they sit there for eight hours straight, peddling themselves through cold calls. There are campaign management specialists in the room with them, acting like a mix between a personal trainer and a slave driver. It’s much worse than a regular sales job because there you are not selling yourself. The rejections you get are rejections of the product, and not of you as a person.

Imagine doing this for years, or for as long as you want to remain in politics. Of course, poor buggers turn into empty husks that barely look human anymore.
