I wouldn’t have gone to this place either. Nobody wants to come off as desperate at 26. The hospital-looking metal tray with that selection of junk food reeks of female desperation. Unless she is hunchbacked and has one leg and three heads, I don’t see why she would accept.

As for the Jewish man in question, I think he needs to consider why he is feeding the worst stereotypes about Jews when he is so stinking rich. He pays for a matchmaker in a city that has crowds of eager single women. This means that he is ridiculously wealthy, yet he expects a young woman who probably obsesses over every calorie and plasters on half of the makeup available on the planet before every date to eat from a trough.

I don’t think it has anything to do with food but with economic calculus…

She wants a big, upfront monetary commitment (so probably high maintenance).

He wants to know if she’s got a stick up her @ss about him spending money or can go with the flow.

Basic mismatch so it’s a good thing to call it off before it began.

And anyway, I was taught that for a first dinner date both parties should have something light to eat before the date so they can order something small and pay more attention to each other rather than be so hungry that they shovel food down their throats the whole time.

May be, but not 100% true.

When I dated, we used to meet in coffee shops (that’s the name?) in a city park or at the mall near it (where a man could park his car) to drink coffee or tea.

The entire thing cost not more than 20 shekels or 6.7 $ per person, and was probably nicer than this place. At least, the coffee shop at the park was nicer.

People are judging from an out of context pretzel…

        I went to the site

        https://www.crownalleynyc.com/

It’s not formal dining but it’s not a fast food place either. The pretzel looks like an artisanal and comes with “House Made Pub Cheese & Truffle Dijon” and costs $8.

The Mac ‘n Cheese ($15) contains “Classic Bechamel with aged Parmesan, Cheddar Jack and Gruyére topped with black truffle infused burrata and drizzled with black truffle oil”

Looks to me like a place for young professionals to hang and be pretentious with each other and he’d probably have to drop at least 80 bucks or so for a bite to eat and a couple of drinks. In other words, probably a pretty good location for a first meet up to see if a second, at a nicer place, is called for.

Totally see your point. Definitely not a bad place for a first date, honestly in my opinion. She definitely wanted a nice restaurant.

        That’s exactly what I’m saying. It’s a vibe thing.

Again, if this were a 20-year-old student from the Midwest, I would say the idea is cute, but it’s a Jewish Wall Street guy in his thirties. Who, I’m sure, expects women to be stick thin and dainty. This is simply weird.

I dated a lot between my two marriages, but I always paid for myself. Never, not once, did I let a man pay. This was very important to me. And I would have rejected this invitation because I don’t see a point in eating out of a trough when I don’t have to. He could have suggested a nice, tasteful coffee shop, and that would have been fine, but this thing in the picture? It’s a mockery.

Why do you think he needed a match maker in The first place. Doesn’t seem like a sociable high emotional intelligence guy to me

Vetting…. in the past, there were armies of withered old dragons (to be clear, both men and women) to size up potential mates and keep young men from being used by golddiggers or women with shady pasts or prevent young women from throwing their life away on a charming chancer.

That’s all been discarded in favor of letting young people make fools of themselves and/or tie themselves to very inappropriate partners.

I’m fairly sure that vetting the pasts of clients is a big part of the working day for a modern matchmaker.

Exactly. Plus, this is a Jewish guy. He needs somebody else to find out if the young lady is Jewish and what kind of Jewish specifically, without having to ask her himself. If you ask somebody directly, it’s possible that she will get in a huff and plaster the story all over social media.
