When I was an undergraduate student, we knew the most bizarre details from our professors’ lives. The gossip I could tell would fill volumes. But our students know nothing about us. The best they could do is decide that I’m married to the other Spanish professor which demonstrates a clear lack of imagination. The last bit of gossip I heard about people at work dates back to the early 2000s.

It’s social media. Nobody needs to gossip about anybody they know because they gossip about strangers. I’m not sure it’s an improvement.

Gossip is very much alive only when the professors are dislikable enough to warrant gossip. In the education department at my sschool, the gossip surrounding teachers involves the assault charge one teacher has on his record, the fact one adjunct stole $45k from her district before having charges dropped, and that the director threw a chair at a kindergarten student while she was a principal. At this point, if students aren’t gossiping about you, it’s probably a testament to how well you are liked.

Au contraire! Gossip is a normal human behavior and the absence of gossip is a signal that something is wrong (or changing in ways that haven’t been accounted for).
