Her Dying Fish

Thank you, everybody, for the well wishes. To be honest, I feel like I’m losing my mind. On Sunday, the doctors told us that my mother was in the final stretch and if we got there by Friday, it would be too late. Both my sister and I happened to be in Europe (different countries) at the time. So I started making heroic efforts to get to Canada.

This morning, though, I had a bizarre conversation with my aunt who saw my mother at the hospital and engaged with her in a debate on what kind of fish to cook for me. From what the doctors said, it sounded like she was unconscious and fading. Definitely not in a state to care about fish recipes.

After 3 days of endless travel, cancelled flight, and airport hotels, I’m standing in front of my hotel in New York, hearing my aunt relay to me my mother’s opinions on the advantages of white fish over red. Right after reporting on this conversation, my aunt asked if I started to think about funeral arrangements. For my clearly alive, fish-opinionated mother.

I apologize for the crude pun in the post’s title but if I don’t laugh about it, I’ll truly go nuts.

She doesn’t want to deal with doctors so she pretends to be asleep/unconscious when they’re around, maybe moans a bit dramatically… but fish! That’s a topic she can get her teeth into (as it were). She is Ukrainian, after all… has she ever been indifferent to fish?

Or maybe your aunt is a little loopy and imagining conversations?
