Unlike a regular professor, a department chair has to be at the office every day during regular working hours. Of course, you get paid more because you’re there more and do more work.
However, this week, the dean told our new department chair that she’s no longer going to be paid extra. She will be paid like a regular professor but still do all of the department chair’s work.
Now the question is: why did he never offer this arrangement to me? Because he knows that it wouldn’t work, I wouldn’t agree. I would immediately step down as chair.
Some people get offered crap, and others don’t. When I was doing a master’s, there was an older woman in my office who was only ever offered to be the other woman by the men she dated. She would always be a mistress, a secret girlfriend, a bit on the side. In my long dating life, I was never offered anything of the kind. I never had to reject such a suggestion because no guy ever made it.
