There is a publishing house in Spain that publishes books for pretentious woke people. For example, it’s considered very chic in a progressive, Portlandia kind of way to leave a book by this publisher lying on your coffee table or on your corporate desk at work. It’s this really hilarious idea of signaling that you are on the side of the downtrodden by buying overpriced books, many of which transmit boutique, far-left ideas that are of interest only to the very privileged.

Of course I am in academia so I am a lot more pretentious than the aspiring middle-management girlbosses and the fading hipsters who love these books. The books increase their status but decrease mine. But in any case, this is not the funny part. The reason I’m writing the post is that the name of this publishing house is Blackie Books.

That Spanish neoliberal strivers who are desperate to be Anglo love this publisher is never going to quit being funny.

Poor saps.

Blackie Books. What a bullshit name for an imprint.

    “Blackie Books”

Curiosity got the better of me and I decided to look it up, and before I could get anywhere else AI solved it for me… in a kind of hilarious way….

“niezależne wydawnictwo …. założone w październiku 2009 roku przez Jana Martí oraz Alice Incontradę. Nazwa ….pochodzi od ich ukochanej suczki o imieniu Blackie.”

“an independent publisher … founded in October, 2009, by Jan Martí and Alice Incontrada. The name is from their beloved bitch, named Blackie.”

In Polish, suczka still has the primary meaning ‘female dog’ but it still sounds odd to me….

Yes, they put something about a doggy on every title page. Still, it is not something you can say aloud in polite company in English.

Do they publish in English? As long as they just publish in Spanish and Catalan I think it’s fine…. funny if they think that having a dumb name in English gives them prestige. But I’m so tired of American preoccupations being projected onto the rest of the world where the context is very different.

I’ve been dreading the moment that the woke folks find out that some Irish people use the word ‘mammy’….

I agree with this for everybody except for the people who keep prattling about how they are cosmopolitan citizens of the world. Those individuals should carry the burden of their chosen identity.
