Kitty Update

I know everybody always likes the kitty updates, so here is one. The kitty used to live in Klara’s room. She slept on an armchair, and everybody was happy. But then we reorganized Klara’s room and moved her bed. It used to stand along one wall, and we put it against another wall. The kitty’s armchair remained in the same spot, but that didn’t matter. The cat decided that she is now going to sleep on Klara’s bed.

The problem is that she didn’t want to sleep in the corner of the bed. She wanted to sleep in the middle. She would displace Klara, who would then come to wake me up in the middle of the night to move the kitty. After three days of this, I realized I was losing my mind, and we moved the cat downstairs to the living room.

This turned out great for Misty (the cat.) We have an open space plan downstairs, which I don’t like, but it’s excellent for the animal because she has a lot of space to explore at night. I hide treats for her in secret places, and she searches and hunts for them, which is fun for her. If I walk into the room right after she has found a treat, she looks at me with this extremely honest expression. It reminds me of how my students stare at me when they haven’t done the reading but want me to believe that they have. It’s hilarious.

However, here is the problem: I have no idea where she now sleeps. My cat book explains what kind of spaces cats often choose for themselves. I looked in all of such places, but for the life of me, I can’t figure out where she actually is sleeping. So I’m tricking her. She’s tricking me. It’s a lot of fun.

Having a cat turned out to be great. My husband and daughter both detest cleaning the litter box, but I don’t mind doing it in the least. I don’t enjoy it or anything, but it’s not a big deal. Observing the cat act like a miniature tiger, being so serious about her hunting duties, is extremely entertaining. She clearly thinks that she’s doing me an enormous service when she guards me whenever I’m reading or working on my computer. She often meows in such an expressive way that it’s almost like human speech. We weep with laughter when she does that. There is the “I told you a million times that I don’t like this bowl, and here you go again giving it to me. Moron” meow. There is the “feed me now, feed me now, feed me now, feed me now” meow. There is the “you are such a disappointment to me” meow.

It’s truly great fun.

The only times when Misty is not at least mildly outraged are when I rub her behind her ear, which she clearly believes is my only purpose in life.

Well of course that is your purpose in life. What else would you be around for?

Most of my childhood, I had a cat that was half siamese, and it showed. She had a really impressive “talking” range– warbles, trills, grumbling, extended monologues. She was also completely batsh*t insane. I adored her. Still have the scars on my arms from when she used to play the “scratch my tummy… psych!” game. They’re still a kind of fond memento. Dang I loved that cat.

    😀

Dogs are for people who need more unconditional affection.

Cats are for people who need more snarky friends.

Yeah, dogs are definitely a pack animal.

Plus, cats don’t pant. I can’t take the panting. It’s so disgusting.

haha, yes. Dogs are disgusting in a number of ways that cats aren’t. Cats are also self-cleaning.

I’m not even saying that as a dog-hater. We had both cats and a dog as kids, and I can’t wait to have one or both again if we can ever get out of rentals. Our dog was the best dog. But, you know, the cat will never go find a dead animal and roll in it. The dog though… he thinks that half-rotted roadkill turtle is doggy Chanel no. 5.
