“Dios, this whole situation between Russia and Ukraine must be hard on your marriage,” an Argentinean colleague says. “I know exactly what it’s like! My husband is Brazilian, and I don’t know how we will survive this summer.”
I strain my brain, trying to remember any recent territorial disputes between Argentina and Brazil.
“It’s the World Cup!” the colleague explains.
“Yes,” I recognize. “That is really hard-core.”
That’s a kind common thing isn’t it, known as “first world problems”? I would say that the main barrier to communication I’ve experienced is the assumption I am talking about first world problems, when I am not. For instance, fear for one’s life and health becomes ‘hurt feelings’. And so on.
