Conflictive Marriages

“Dios, this whole situation between Russia and Ukraine must be hard on your marriage,” an Argentinean colleague says. “I know exactly what it’s like! My husband is Brazilian, and I don’t know how we will survive this summer.”

I strain my brain, trying to remember any recent territorial disputes between Argentina and Brazil.

“It’s the World Cup!” the colleague explains.

“Yes,” I recognize. “That is really hard-core.”

  1. That’s a kind common thing isn’t it, known as “first world problems”? I would say that the main barrier to communication I’ve experienced is the assumption I am talking about first world problems, when I am not. For instance, fear for one’s life and health becomes ‘hurt feelings’. And so on.
