A hit-and-run in China: evidence that all totalitarian societies are the same. This is exactly what would have happened in Russia.

A little election humor: what Bernie would look like with a Trump-like tan and a hair transplant.

Finally, a student protest that sound mature and intelligent. It’s not important whether the students are right or not. What matters is that they are finally looking outside of themselves and noticing something other than their own inflated woes.

Rising seas alert! Watch how science becomes a sensational news story.

Stalinism produced so much suffering, tragedy and loss. Why, then, is there next to no fiction about this era?

Israel’s shameful treatment of women. What a disgrace!

Every loser under the sun finds comfort in pitying brilliant, successful women. Don’t these idiots realize how repetitive and pathetic they are?

The villain gap: Why Soviet movies rarely had American bad guys.

Alaska’s only Congressman believes that “Sanders or Clinton would mandate when to get up, what to eat, what you are thinking, what school you are going to go to and what you are going to believe.” Simply put, he imagines them his as strict parents. Which is very creepy.

A self-pitying idiot moans, “Most of us can only shake our heads and wonder what life is like for those who have time and energy to study what they want, rather than what they need.” I’m an immigrant, my life is 10 times harder than this fool’s yet I always studied only what I wanted. Which is precisely why I’m successful and the fool isn’t.

  1. “A hit-and-run in China: evidence that all totalitarian societies are the same.”

    I read an article about a year ago (the link is long gone) that described some documented incidents involving cars and pedestrians in China. After running over pedestrians, the drivers deliberately ran over the injured persons several more times to make sure that they were dead!

    The logic is this: If you “accidently” kill somebody, it’s much cheaper to pay the victim’s family a one-time “blood-money” payment, rather than make repeated payments for long-term medical care of a severely injured person.

  2. I wish Columbia would send us the Moore sculpture. We have a glitzy new sculpture that looks terrible and is not even art. This would be a stellar replacement and is also a good color for the spot.

    1. If the Henry Moore sculpture would be an improvement over the one currently at your school, we appreciate your reticence in posting a picture of it.

      For what my opinion is worth (nothing), I agree with the students who likened Moore’s clump of metal to a “poorly formed pterodactyl.”

  3. Just a nice poem:

    Mr. Z.

    Taught early that his mother’s skin was the sign of error,
    He dressed and spoke the perfect part of honor;
    Won scholarships, attended the best schools,
    Disclaimed kinship with jazz and spirituals;
    5 Chose prudent, raceless views of each situation,
    Or when he could not cleanly skirt dissension,
    Faced up to the dilemma, firmly seized
    Whatever ground was Anglo-Saxonized.
    In diet, too, his practice was exemplary:
    10 Of pork in its profane forms he was wary;
    Expert in vintage wines, sauces and salads,
    His palate shrank from cornbread, yams and collards.
    He was as careful whom he chose to kiss:
    His bride had somewhere lost her Jewishness,
    15 But kept her blue eyes; an Episcopalian
    Prelate proclaimed them matched chameleon.
    Choosing the right addresses, here, abroad,
    They shunned those places where they might be barred;
    Even less anxious to be asked to dine
    20 Where hosts catered to kosher accent or exotic skin.
    And so he climbed, unclogged by ethnic weights,
    An airborne plant, flourishing without roots.
    Not one false note was struck—until he died:
    His subtly grieving widow could have flayed
    25 The obit writers, ringing crude changes on a clumsy phrase:
    “One of the most distinguished members of his race.”

  4. Janus

    Janus writes books for women’s liberation;
    His wife types up the scripts from his dictation.

    ~ Laurence Perrine

    I checked that:

    In ancient Roman religion and myth, Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, doorways, passages, and endings. He is usually depicted as having two faces, since he looks to the future and to the past. [wiki]

  5. I loved your links about the lack of fiction RE Stalinist era and (especially) the link why Americans weren’t the villains in Soviet movies to the same extent. 🙂

    On another subject:

    Mikael Parkvall, a linguist at Stockholm University, found that “Finnish was the second language of Sweden for centuries. Now Arabic is overtaking it. ”

    Sweden isn’t the only European country to have Arabic as a second most spoken language. Parkvall’s research found it was the same in Denmark and that Arabic was the third most spoken language in France and the Netherlands.

  6. After Anal Rape, Left Wing Activist Felt ‘Guilt And Responsibility’ His Migrant Attacker Was Deported

    A left wing activist has bared all to a Norwegian documentary crew about his rape at the hands of a Somalian migrant, and his despair at seeing the man deported.

    An active member of the Norwegian Socialist Left Party (SV) who described himself as an ardent “feminist and anti-racist” explained the difficulty he experienced accepting that he had been anally raped by a male migrant. He said he didn’t blame the man for the attack, and regretted the fact he had been sent back to Somalia.

  7. And one more quote. Tell me what you think.

    One in five Muslims in Britain never enter a non-Muslim house

    • 39 per cent of Muslims, male and female, say a woman should always obey her husband

    • 31 per cent of British Muslims support the right of a man to have more than one wife

    • 52 per cent of Muslims did not believe that homosexuality should be legal

    • 23 per cent of Muslims support the introduction of Sharia law rather than the laws laid down by parliament

    1. I think that, except for the last one, the numbers would be similar for the Russian-speaking immigrant communities.

      As for the first point, in the 5 years I lived in Canada, I was never invited into the house of anybody born in Canada. I visited the homes of Colombian, Spanish, Argentinean, Kenyan, Malaysian, Venezuelan, Iranian, and Mexican immigrants, so this wasn’t the question of my unsociability. And this was Canada. I’m sure it’s worse in the UK.
