Does anybody know what these scary creatures are called? They abound here but I have no idea what they are. I managed to overcome my terror of them and came up close enough to take a picture. Apparently, they have no fear whatsoever of people.
Swans are for sure scary! (Although I am a bit biased on the subject. Aged about two and a half, one grabbed my shoe-laces and tried to pull me into a pond. And I got chased by one whilst rowing once. That was BAD).
Is this the pier at St. Petersburg? These pelicans are permanent residents here. You’re lucky I am not in Florida now, else I could have met you in person to debate the contents of some of your blogs. 😛
they’re just brown pelicans
their beaks can hold more than their belly cans

Really? My mother said these were pelicans but I’d seen pelicans before and they looked completely different.

I remember pelicans as cute and cuddly. These ones are kind of scary, though.

I think they look kinda small for a pelican. The last one I saw was white and giant.

They are indeed pelicans, the smallest species I believe. They are quite common all over Florida (I live in FL).

If you ever want to meet a really scary beast then you should come here and I will introduce you to the swans in our city park.

I always said swans were scary but people made fun of me for that. They are aggressive, too.

Probably depends on what kind of swan we are talking about.
AFAIK the white Eurasian kind is the only one not really afaid of people anymore.
But I think it goes to show that those considered the most beautiful and graceful turn out to be the biggest meanies.

Those pelicans look kind of… opinionated.
