A Typical Argentinean Woman

A student is making a presentation.

Student: This character is a typical Argentinean mother.

Me: And what are typical Argentinean mothers like?

Student: They all like to cook, clean, and be with their families.

  1. What the hell are you teaching them? Movies with Mirtha Legrand? (though that would actually be entertaining).

  2. “La cautiva”? I haven’t seen it, but I am wondering which is she talking about. If it’s the 47 minutes film by Adrian Caetano, I want a copy!!! (and I’m surprised your student got it). And the movie is probably about the recurring XIXth century Argentine trope of the white woman kidnapped by native tribes (remember that in Argentina the pattern of Conquest was more similar to the US: a genocide, and wasn’t settled until 1880). A weird observation for the student to make…

    1. No, no, it is a film about a child of desaparecidos who was adopted and who discovers her true origin. Very similar to La historia oficial, from what I understood but from the perspective of a teenage girl.

  3. Can you ask your friend where she had access to “La cautiva”? I like Caetano and I may include Echeverria’s short story in my Span. Am. lit. next semester (to change from “El matadero”).

Many Argentinian women played significant roles in my intellectual formation. For that reason I have a very high opinion of Argentinian women!.

  4. Ohhh… because I remember from Grad School a friend mentioning a tv movie based on Echeverria’s La Cautiva.

I do not like La historia oficial.

    1. Yes, I think that’s the Caetano one. I need to start exploring how easy or not it is to get copies of Caetano’s TV series. I really like him, but I’ve only been able to watch his movies
