N. always promised me that when he got a high-paying job, he would take me to a very good restaurant with the first paycheck. That paycheck is coming the day after tomorrow, people, and I need a good restaurant in St. Louis.
And by good I mean expensive. I deserve to be taken to the place for stinking rich folks for how good I’ve been during the harsh times of N.’s unemployment. He agrees and leaves the choice of restaurant entirely to me, as long as it isn’t Ethiopian. For some reason, he dislikes Ethiopian food, which I don’t understand.
I also hate noise, so it needs to be a quiet, romantic place. I’m too old to be around drunk adolescents or amidst huge boisterous crowds.
If anybody has any suggestions, I will be eternally grateful. Where do you go in St. Louis where you have some (somebody else’s) money to burn?

We love Japanese food. But we have a great Japanese restaurant right in our town. It feels weird traveling all the way to St. Louis for that.

I’m also planning to get filthy drunk and that can’t be done in a Japanese restaurant. I can’t drink and hold the sticks! 🙂 And N. gets embarrassed when I eat with my hands. 🙂

Ok, well it’s not my geographical area. One of the interesting things about Japanese people is they are not ashamed to get very drunk if it is for reasons associated with bonding with colleagues or potential clients in order to do business.

Awww. You’re supposed to eat sushi with your hands, in Japan you grasp the sushi with your hand, turn it to dip the top in shoyu, and then eat it in one or two bites.
I’ve never been to St. Louis, but as someone who appreciates fine meals and knows what a treat they can be after a long period of hardship, I want to wish you and N.Bon Appétit!

I remember fondly Bar Italia, from some years ago. Italian food, and I think the owners are Eritrean. Not very very fancy, but good food and lovely atmosphere.

Harvest is great, we only went once because it is really expensive, but it is very good. If you want good meat. The block is probably one of the best, and more affordable. Niche is truly good too, but I like better the experience at Brasserie by Niche. It is the same owner, but the second one is based on exotic (maybe not exotic but very good nonetheless) “tapas” that you combine with the best cocktails in town. The waiters are very knowledgeable about their drinks. Let me tell you that you will need their help. I didn’t know half of the ingredients in the cocktails. The only inconvenient is that it is not a quiet romantic environment, but if you are planing on getting toasted… who wants a quiet romantic place anyways?!

Italian? Seafood? Chinese? Steak? Indian? “California” nouveau cuisine?
Ethanol preference? Wine? Beer? Liquors?
Tony’s (downtown) has been THE Italian haute cuisine, formal service restaurant in the past. It should still be good today, though I don’t know if it is still the one and only 5 star restaurant in town. Charlie Gitto’s on the Hill is also a good place.
Hurry up and specify, I see my chairman at lunch and I might be able to get some good tips from her. I am afraid that I lean toward ethnic.
Lulu’s on Olive is the place to go for good Chinese fish dishes, and other Chinese dishes, and they do a fine dim sum on weekends. Unfortunately the ethanol list isn’t huge – it never is at Chinese restaurants.

Ocean is a good seefood place, but again we are in St.Louis… so it won’ t be close to truly good seafood, if you know what I mean!

I know this is a little late but I went to Mike Shannon’s for my second anniversary and it’s amazing. It’s a steakhouse, expensive and fancy but not too fancy. I think we spent about $200 there (just two people) on drinks, steak entrees and three sides.
