And some people, in the meanwhile, keep getting articles accepted for publication.

OK, one article. And they have requested revisions. These will be big, important revisions and I’m only given 60 days to make them.

On the positive side, these are very good revisions that make a lot of sense to me. I feel like the reviewers have hinted that I can take the argument as far as it would go.

This is an important article for me because this is a completely new area of research for me. It has nothing to do with either the Bildungsroman or nationalism. This will be a beginning of a new major research project for me.

At the same time, this article matters to me because I used it to prove to myself that you can still do research while teaching 3 courses. I researched and wrote it in its entirety during the Spring semester. I used to worship at the altar of “you can’t write during a teaching semester, research can only be done in summer”, but now I’m over that shit.

The suggested revisions make me very happy because I believe that I still have a lot to learn as a scholar and I’m grateful for useful suggestions from my reviewers.

I love research, people. Especially when it gets accepted for publication.

  2. Now I understand why you wrote a lot about Bildungsroman & nationalism on your blog. May I ask what the new topic is? Will you write about it too?

    1. I already started blogging about it. Do you remember my posts about Teresa Pla Meseguer, an intersex guerrilla fighter of the post-war Spain? This is what the article is about.

      The project will have to do with the recent flurry of novels in Spain that discuss the Civil War. There are so many of them coming out these days, and they are all amazing. And very very long. 🙂

  3. Wanted to ask, you’re a professor of literature. I understand how Bildungsroman is connected to it, but is how nationalism? Seeing how the way a nation is built and then sees itself is reflected in its’ literature through the ages?

    1. A project of building a national identity always incorporates the important national writers who are used to give value to the national identity. For my Master’s dissertation, I studied how Spain’s famous Golden Age playwrights Lope de Vega and Calderon were used by the Enlightened thinkers to support their vision of national identity. It was a fascinating process where the nationalist ideologues wrote lengthy treatises on Lope and Calderon and how their plays supposedly did or did not play into the current myth of Spanish national identity. It is amazing to see how the texts by these writers were manipulated for political goals.

      National identity is a big issue for Spain and writers have been trying to address the country’s nationalist mythologies for a long time.

      2. It is not coyness. What I meant is that I publish at a slow pace. I used to feel guilty about it, but now I am OK with my publication pace.
