I’m feeling very self-righteous because I just declared all of the cash payments nobody would have ever known about that I received this year on my tax return.

I have promised myself never to live in fear of an audit. Because I have seen close and personal what that does to people.
As the pro-tax ads in Russia say, pay taxes to buy your peace of mind. 🙂

I have not a great knowledge of the IRS, but here in Québec I never heard about an audit for cash payments. We need a black market in order to have a real economy.

You are lucky. In Quebec, even when the Ministere de Revenue cannot prove anything, it still slaps an enormous fine on you and explains it with, “Well, we see you have this and that property, so it means you can pay the fine.” This is something that happened to a family member, so I’m now scared forever.

Very true. They just single out people who are easy pray and eat them alive. That’s how the bureaucrat salary gets paid.
