I know I am showing extreme ignorance but seeking knowledge is never as shameful as not seeking it.
Does anybody know what this impossibly ugly building in Madrid is? And whose brilliant idea it was to stick it in the midst of beautiful buildings and monuments? It looks like an ugly mushroom that tried to be a pagoda and failed miserably. In Madrid, every building is a work of art in itself. This is why it is very jarring to encounter the ugly mushroom.

And oh, they stick it next to such lovely architecture too! It’s like looking at a defaced painting.

It is extremely jarring to see this. Possibly, the person who decided to stick the building there really hated Columbus and wanted to punish his statue by forcing it to stand next to this building. 🙂

It’s the Mutua Madrileña Tower by architect Cesar Pelli.

Thank you! It’s tough being an architect because your mistakes stick out like sore thumbs.

It’s especially tough being a successful architect, because your mistakes are 90 meters tall and stand in the world’s largest cities. Kinda hard to miss.

Looks like a government tower or an engorged nuclear power facility.

None of the above. Daughter says is Torres de Colón. Ugly indeed owned by Rumasa, one of the largest Spanish companies in Spain, with shoddy financial practices whose founder, Jose Maria Ruiz Mateos in his 80s, reentered in jail in recent days.
