From a student’s reading response:
It took me a while to realize that these characters are mother and daughter. The mother constantly humiliates her daughter, criticizes her, and makes her feel horrible about herself. This is just not how mothers act.
I think this student should let everybody know the name of the planet she comes from.

Students should not express that kind of unproven opinions in that kind of work.

The student no doubt writes from experience, and she is blessed. Many families are of such a kind, so I would not criticize her for her comment. Probably she does not read science, and so does not underststnand the dangers of induction. But then many well-educated individuals suffer from the same failure in that regard.

She must have a wonderful mother, but one who has kept her pretty close to home… When I was a teenager my friends and I used to bitch about our mothers often.
