And, Finally, Some Good News

Of the married women making more money than their spouses, 71 percent of the husbands are working and they have a median family income of $80,000, according to 2011 numbers.

In 1960, only 4 percent of married moms were making more than their husbands; now it’s 23 percent. That translates into 5.1 million married “breadwinner moms.”

I’m not one of these women and will probably never be for obvious reasons, but good for them! Of course, there could be less unemployed men and even more high-achieving women, but the trend is positive. Now it needs to speed up a little.

  1. “Solo breadwinner” is kinda sad. Maybe it’s a bit paranoid, but I believe both partners should be employed, too risky otherwise (and I don’t think there are many countries on the wrong side of the former Iron Curtain where one partner can simply stay home…).

    1. It’s not paranoid at all. Both partners should be earning. I’ve never liked the expression ‘breadwinner’ anyway, as it implies that all the pressure of bringing income into the home should fall on one person. When both people are contributing, it’s generally better for their well-being, and if one person falls sick or is temporarily unemployed there’s some backup from the other.

        – Exactly! The stress of being solely responsible for not only yourself but somebody else, too, is very harsh. I’m glad I don’t have to be in that position again.

        1. Most definitely. After 6 months out of work, one needs psychological help to reintegrate into workforce. For those who can’t afford such help, the answer is often alcohol and other addictive behavior. 😦

  2. Want some laughs? Watch these men on Fox News lament this horrible development in our society. The funniest is when one of them, who isn’t exactly a paragon of scientific literacy, talks about how it’s unnatural when women head a household because females typically aren’t dominant in the natural world (he actually has no clue about dominance patterns in nature, plus he talks about nuclear families as if they’re the only natural family the world has ever known).

The sad thing is there are many people who take these guys seriously.

    1. Poor little freaks. 🙂 Now imagine the horror they feel at the idea they won’t be able to buy sex. Their entire way of existence is slipping away! And nobody cares!

You’ve got to feel sorry for them.
