I’m writing the “Acknowledgments” page of my book. It took me quite a while to realize that in describing the input of the scholar who directed my doctoral dissertation I said that “she worked tiresomely to help me improve my writing.”
There is a legendary review of a mathematics paper from the 1950’s which concluded “This paper fills a much-needed gap in the literature.”
The review journal, Mathematical Reviews, changed their policy not to allow such things not too long thereafter.
