Does Richard Cohen even re-read the crap he writes? Does anybody?
Today’s GOP is not racist, as Harry Belafonte alleged about the tea party, but it is deeply troubled — about the expansion of government, about immigration, about secularism, about the mainstreaming of what used to be the avant-garde. People with conventional views must repress a gag reflex when considering the mayor-elect of New York — a white man married to a black woman and with two biracial children.
So people who need to “repress a gag reflex” when seeing biracial children are not racists?
I’m beyond disgusted right now.
Yup. Many white people think that as long as you’re not a member of the KKK or use a specific racial slur, you’re not racist. Conversely, if you point out white racism, that makes you a racist or a “reverse racist”. Richard Cohen speaks to people who think that way.
Republicans are sadly obsessed with other people’s genitalia.

It’s a mystery to me how a guy can write something this racist and not even be aware of it. It is unbelievable that in this day and age something would write this kind of racist garbage like it’s normal.

And as long as you have a ‘best friend who’s black.’ Whenever people put their foot in their mouth, they summon their good black friend to rescue their image.

This is absolutely disgusting! My university adopted the policy that prevents people from mentioning the university in online spaces, and now I can see why. I was very disturbed by this policy at the time but couldn’t figure out why it was bothering me. Now I can see what the danger of it is.

If I’m charitable I can imagine that this is the result of bad editing or a missing sentence or he was having a senior moment and scrambled what he wanted to write…. except I can’t imagine what additions would make it less awful.
If you gag at the mere sight of a multiracial family then… you’re racist. End of story.
I foresee imminent retirement and/or a very interesting few media watching days as this particular shit hits a very large and very fast fan.

I sincerely doubt that imminent retirement is in the cards. Once you have a cushy job as an a-list columnist at a newspaper, God alone can remove you.

I don’t know, if he doesn’t get fired over this, then that’s just the limit.

Yep. Cohen is a creep, always has been a creep. Most people look at the deBlasios and think ‘Nice looking family”.

Now he’s saying that he’s been… misunderstood (awwwww, let’s hug and pet him!) and that it’s all the editor’s fault!
He’s not sickened by interracial couples or children, it’s some hypothetical tea partiers who are…. you know the ones who aren’t racist.
My best guess: He’s mixed up his dosage of crazy pills resulting in a temporary surge from the usual “moderately insane” level all the way to “feces slinging monkey on acid”.

I also thought that he must be on something because the comment is just too out there. Even the stupidest racists know that making such comments in such a public format will not be taken well.

I live the way that he now whines about how being called a racist is “hurtful.”
You know: unlike saying that you need to suppress a gag reflex when you see a biracial family.

It is, indeed, incredible that he is trying to present himself as a victim in this situation.

I seriously do not understand how he could have written those words out in sincerity. At this point in America, it is uncommon *not* to have biracial members of your family. I have several, and so do most people I know. I assure you my beautiful niece is cuter than any member of Richard Cohen’s family, and the only thing that makes me gag is that paragraph.

Man, you are scaring me. The first thing I thought about when I read Cohen’s article was MY BEAUTIFUL NIECE. You and I really do have a lot in common. 🙂
