I have experienced this anger too and have been really surprised by it. It seems that thinking for themselves feels to students like walking on thin ice where they might break in anytime. So they prefer not to think and instead either start a frantic activity of doing something totally pointless or become passive and discouraged.
If only we could have a culture which is not so afraid of failure, and where creativity in all parts of life would be seen as positive and important.
