A preacher on the radio is trying to convince people to go to sleep early.
“It makes no sense to stay up late!” he exclaims. “I have never heard of anything fun, useful or important taking place after 9 pm. Have you?”
As I always say, never ask a question if you are not sure you are ready to hear the answer.
There is this study about food. It basically proofs that any food, especially fat or sweet food, gets increasingly delicious the later it gets. The study’s highlight was deer roast at 3am. Have you heard about it? No? That’s because I am still conducting it! 🙂

Just out of curiosity, (and I’m aware that the answer may make my eyes roll so hard that they hurt) what was the rationale behind not staying up ‘late’?

From what I understood, staying up late leads to sinful behavior because strong temptations come out at night. Night is the time the devil comes out to play.

Early to bed, early to rise,
Makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.

It is pure anti-intellectualism. ‘Burning the midnight oil’ is a euphemism for that dangerous activity known as studying.
Of course, as you suggest, there may be other temptations at that time also.

When a friend from my high school got pregnant, her mother was puzzled. “I don’t know how this is possible,” she said. “I NEVER let her out of the house after dark.” 🙂 🙂
